The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Department of Anesthesia currently has an opening for one full-time (100%) Assistant Research Scientist (PRJ1). The appointment is offered is a specified three year term with the possibility to extend pending funding and satisfactory performance. The Assistant Research Scientist will, in an advanced research setting, conduct multi-disciplinary studies that examine how acute pain, chronic pain and inflammation are regulated by acupuncture treatment. This laboratory functions in a highly collaborative environment with other laboratories invested in studying acute and chronic pain.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Design and initiate technical experiments with oversight by principal investigator
Work independently and as a member of a team to execute experimental protocols
Develop hypotheses to be tested
Collect and analyze complex data
Prepare and submit manuscripts for publication
Contribute to submission of grants through authorship and provision of preliminary data
Oversee laboratory operations as needed
Supervise medical students and/or technicians regarding laboratory and experiment procedures

Successful candidates will be subject to a criminal background check.
Requires a Ph. D. in neuroscience, pharmacology, physiology or related field.
Small animal handling skills, including working with conscious rats or mice.
Demonstrated ability to independently design, execute and interpret experiments.
3-5 years' experience in the application of behavioral, molecular, cellular or electrophysiological knowledge and skills to test research hypotheses.
Strong organizational skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
A strong publication record.
Experience with applied acupuncture in humans or laboratory rodents
3-5 years' experience conducting research investigating the neurobiology of pain
Aseptic surgical skills
Familiarity with Microsoft Office products, graphical and statistical software
