The University of Florida’s College of Medicine – Jacksonville (COM-J) invites applications and nominations for the position of Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. This is a 0.50 FTE faculty administrative title appointment to be performed in conjunction with a clinical department appointment, with an anticipated start date on or before July 1, 2019.
The COM-J is the largest of the three UF colleges - medicine, nursing and pharmacy - located on the approximately 110-acre UF Health Jacksonville campus. The college's 16 clinical science departments house more than 400 faculty members and 360 residents and fellows. The college offers 32 accredited graduate medical education programs. In addition to graduate medical education, clinical rotations in all the major disciplines are provided for students from the UF College of Medicine in Gainesville. Third-year medical students enrolled at UF spend about 25 percent of their training at the Jacksonville campus, gaining valuable experience in an urban setting.
Reporting to the Dean of the College of Medicine – Jacksonville, the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs (SAD/FA) will be responsible for:
Recruitment, Appointment and Retention. The SAD/FA, in partnership with the Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs, will assist the Dean in strategies to identify specific faculty recruitments that promote the strategic plan. The SAD/FA will participate in the formation and work of search committees charged by the Dean, providing information and assistance as needed to bring each search to a successful outcome. The SAD/FA will oversee ongoing assessments of faculty vitality, and coordinate college-wide faculty retention efforts, such as professional development programs, regular performance feedback, programs supporting career-family balance, tangible recognition of teaching and clinical service, and meaningful faculty participation in institutional governance.
Faculty Development. The SAD/FA works with the deans, department chairs and other leaders in the COM-J to develop and implement programs that help faculty advance their professional careers. These include new faculty programs, workshops, faculty rewards and recognition, college-wide structured mentoring programs and leadership and career development programs. The SAD/FA will identify issues that impact faculty retention and faculty well-being to advise the Dean on strategies to improve faculty satisfaction and performance, with a clear goal of making the COM-J a preferred and satisfying work environment. The SAD/FA oversees the activities of the COM-J Director for Work-Life Center. The SAD/FA will partner with the Senior Associate Dean for Education for those development opportunities necessary to support vibrant GME programs and ACGME Requirements. The SAD/FA will partner with the Senior Associate Dean for Research on those initiatives to support the growth of research on the campus at both the individual and aggregate level.
Promotion and Tenure. The SAD/FA provides oversight and leadership for the promotion and tenure (P&T) processes for COM-J faculty, recommending to the Dean faculty members to serve on P&T committees, and annual assessment and report to the faculty on P&T activities. The SAD/FA will work with the Dean; Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs; Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs (P&T); and Department Chairs to continually refine and improve the assessment and annual evaluation process for faculty. The SAD/FA will work closely with the COM Gainesville SAD/FA on continual assessment and refinement of COM P&T guidelines; and will oversee the activities of the COM-J Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs (P&T).
Equity and Inclusion. The SAD/FA contributes to the development and implementation of COM-J initiatives to achieve equity and inclusion among its faculty including activities of the COM-J Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion and the combined COM/UFJPI/UF Health Jacksonville Diversity Committee. In addition, the SAD/FA will work with the Vice-President, Community Engagement and Chief Diversity Officer for UF Health to support Equity and Inclusion initiatives across the UF Health-Jacksonville collective enterprise.
Advancement of Women and Minority Faculty. The SAD/FA develops and implements a specific strategic plan to inspire the recruitment and advancement of women and minority students, residents, staff, and faculty. The SAD/FA assists the UF Association of Professional Women in Jacksonville faculty group in developing and disseminating programs of interest to women in the COM-J.
Faculty Orientation and Resources. The SAD/FA will partner with the Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs in developing, publishing, updating, and maintaining a COM-J Faculty Onboarding website and check list, which contains information to support the rapid assimilation into the COM-J community and provides resources for professional development, faculty life, and faculty well being in the UF COM-J.
University Interactions. The SAD/FA will communicate regularly with Faculty Council Leadership to facilitate identification of faculty concerns and address potential solutions. The SAD/FA will assist the Dean in processing faculty grievances.
Candidates must be an M.D. or Ph.D., have a distinguished record of innovative leadership, scholarly accomplishments and administration appropriate for appointment to the rank of Professor in either a clinical or tenure-track position. The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.
