The Ohio State University College of Medicine invites applications and nominations of highly qualified faculty members for the position of Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs.  The vice dean represents a key leadership role for all three mission areas of the College of Medicine to support the health and wellness of the faculty of the College of Medicine. The vice dean reports to the dean and serves as a member of the College of Medicine executive leadership team. Specific roles for the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs include, but are not limited to:

  • Work directly with the dean and senior leaders to impact the health and wellness of and to enrich the academic culture and environment for all College of Medicine faculty.
  • Oversight of the College of Medicine (COM) faculty appointment, promotion and tenure (P&T) processes. This role includes assessment and refinement of COM appointment, promotion and tenure guidelines, recommendations to the dean regarding the appointment of faculty members to serve on committees, and annual assessment and reporting to the faculty on P&T activities.
  • Oversight of the Center for Faculty Advancement, Mentoring and Engagement (FAME). This role includes development and management of new faculty programs, workshops, faculty rewards and recognition, college-wide structured mentoring programs and leadership and career development programs.
  • Guidance, oversight and mentorship to the Faculty Experience Group (FEG). The FEG's mission is to establish actionable items, provide guidance on implementation and accelerate interventions to improve the faculty experience. Serve as the liaison for faculty engagement and culture work throughout the COM.
  • Serve as a liaison for the dean to the faculty council and lead the College Council Agenda committee. The faculty council serves as a forum to discuss COM faculty issues and as a vehicle to facilitate communication between the faculty and the COM administration.
  • Lead efforts to create a new awards committee for the College of Medicine
  • Oversight of faculty equity, diversity and inclusion programs. This role includes development and implementation of a strategic plan to inspire the recruitment, retention and promotion of women and underrepresented minority faculty. The vice dean provides oversight of the Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) faculty group in developing and disseminating programs of interest to women in the COM.  The vice dean partners with the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion to achieve diversity goals.
  • Facilitates support and guidance to faculty and chairs for the resolution of conflicts and for the facilitation/application of applicable college and university policies.
  • Serves as the College of Medicine liaison with The Ohio State University Office of Academic Affairs to facilitate identification of policy, advocate for COM faculty and other matters that affect the faculty in the COM including conflict resolution, faculty grievances and faculty discipline. The vice dean oversees the Office of Academic Affairs within the COM.

Faculty candidates at the rank of professor in the tenure track from all disciplines and backgrounds (clinical, basic science) with a strong history of faculty mentoring, leadership and experience in academic affairs (faculty promotion and/or development) are encouraged to apply. This position will be a 50% to 75% appointment in the dean’s office with the balance of effort in the home academic department based on the candidate’s background and academic interests.
