Adirondack Health is centrally located in the heart of the six-million-acre Adirondack Park. The Adirondack Park forest preserve is an intricate mix of public and private lands and was created by an act of the State Legislature in 1885 which stated, “the lands now or hereafter constituting the Forest Preserve shall be forever kept as wild forest lands.” The Park is the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States, greater in size than Yellowstone, Everglades, Glacier, and Grand Canyon National Parks combined. Roughly 48 percent of the land within the Park belongs to the people of New York State and is constitutionally protected to remain a “forever wild” forest preserve. The remaining 52 percent is private land which includes settlements, farms, timber lands, businesses, homes, and camps.
Home to the 1980 Olympic Winter games, this picturesque region includes more than 600 bodies of navigable lakes, rivers and streams, and extensive hiking trails of the sprawling High Peaks Wilderness. Area residents and visitors enjoy downhill skiing at Whiteface Mountain or cross-country at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. Other activities include climbing one of 46 Adirondack High Peaks, fly-fishing in the legendary AuSable River, paddling on one of the many crystal-clear lakes, golfing at any of the local award-winning courses, or dining and relaxing in the world-renowned Olympic Village of Lake Placid. The area has one of only 16 bobsled runs in the western hemisphere and it is one of the few places in the contiguous U.S. that offers dogsled and sleigh rides.
